People with tinnitus often experience some sound while there is no external sound. They often refer to this sound as ringing in the ears. They may also experience hissing, whistling, or clicking sounds. Tinnitus can be temporary or chronic and persistent. It usually occurs after the age of 50. However, children and adolescents may also experience it.

Tinnitus is not actually a disease. It can be a symptom of some other underlying problem. The noise heard by people suffering from tinnitus is not external noise, i.e. it cannot be heard by others. The sound can be in only one ear or both from the inside of the head.

The most common form of noise heard by people with tinnitus is a high-pitched ringing noise, and this can be annoying.

Tinnitus Causes

Several health problems can cause tinnitus. The exact cause of tinnitus is not known. However, there are some common tinnitus causes.

  • Hearing loss due to aging: Many people face hearing loss because of their age usually after their 50s. Hearing loss can be a cause for tinnitus.
  • Loud-noise: Exposure too loud noise for a long time can also be a cause for tinnitus. Tinnitus caused by short-term exposure to loud noises usually goes away after some time. But if exposed to loud noises for a long time, then it may lead to a permanent problem.
  • Injuries in neck or head: Injuries in head or neck can inner ear or brain functions that are linked to hearing. Tinnitus caused by such injuries is usually in one ear.
  • Changes in Ear Bone: One of the common causes of tinnitus can be the stiffening of bones in the middle ear. This is usually caused by abnormal growth of the bone.
  • Earwax blockage: Too much accumulation of earwax becomes hard to wash away naturally and it causes hearing loss or irritation in the eardrum. This can also be a cause for tinnitus.

The most common cause of tinnitus is damage in the inner ear hair cells. The damaged hair causes sound vibration, which leads to the noise heard during tinnitus.

Tinnitus Treatment-

Tinnitus can’t be cured permanently if it is caused due to other health conditions. Here the source causing Tinnitus has to be looked into and treated for a Tinnitus cure. At the same time, there are treatments to suppress the noise that is heard, this treatment helps to an extent but is not guaranteed. The doctors will try to find the other health condition, which causes tinnitus. Some steps taken by the doctor for the tinnitus treatment are:

  • Removal of earwax: As you know, the accumulation of earwax is one of the tinnitus causes. Removing the accumulated earwax can eliminate the symptoms of tinnitus.
  • Treatment of blood vessel condition: Underlying problems in blood vessels require surgery, medication, or any other treatment.
  • Change in medication: If you are already taking medications then the doctor will check if the medication causes tinnitus then he may recommend changing the medication or reducing the intake of that drug.

If the condition is not curable, then the doctor will take measures to suppress the noise to reduce the effect of tinnitus. The doctors may suggest using some electronic devices to reduce the noise.
